A Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence
Our mission is to protect the nation from the physical and economic harm, caused by the threat, real or perceived, of attack using explosive devices. We pursue this mission using both ground-breaking research and widespread education. ---
The Center of Excellence for Explosives Detection, Mitigation and Response is a multi-university Department of Homeland Security Center of Excellence (CoE) with three primary objectives:
Conduct transformational research and technology development for effective detection, mitigation and response to the explosives related threats facing the nation.
Establish systemic connections to the DHS Center of Excellence University Network and beyond to the broader academic community to facilitate collaborative links to find and develop the best solutions.
The CoE is designed to reach out to citizens of all ages to enhance their awareness of pertinent science and engineering so that they will make better informed decisions and provide for the next generations of those protecting our populations. We are particularly interested in preparing the next generations of researchers
A fact sheet for the Center is available in PDF format.
The University of Rhode Island Chemistry Department will sponsor two special training sessions again this summer. Each two-week session is open to Rhode Island high school students with at least one year of chemistry. The program includes hands-on experience with the tools of chemical analysis such as gas and liquid chromatographs, thermal analysis equipment, infrared/ultra-violet/visible spectrometers and mass spectrometers.

"How many people can say that they’ve made 130 pipe bombs? Jimmie Oxley can, and she does it for science. Or, should I say, for the science of keeping us safe."
